    The town (la ciudad)

The bungalow is located in Motul, a small town of 20.000 inhabitants which is known in Mexico for its Huevos Motuleños (a breakfast dish). The dish is made with eggs on tortillas with black beans and cheese often with other ingredients such as ham, peas, plantains, and salsa picante.

Motul was a site of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization, said to have been founded in the 11th century by a priest named Zac Mutul. The city was ruled by the Pech family. After the fall of Yucatán's central government in Mayapan in the 1440s, the Pech ruled a regional kingdom called Cehpech with its capital in Motul.

With the Spanish conquest of Yucatán, Conquistador Francisco de Montejo made Motul a Spanish colonial town. Motul was granted the status of a city on 22 February 1872.

Motul was the birthplace of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a former Governor of Yucatán who was assassinated in 1924. In his honor, the formal name of the city of Motul was changed to Motul de Carrillo Puerto. Things to see are  a Spanish colonial era Franciscan monastery with interesting frescos and the house were Felipe Carrillo Puerto was born and which is now a museum.

    The area of the bungalow

Close are the beach from Telchac (25 minutes by car) the Maya temple complex Dzitzebaltum (25 minutes by car), the cenote Sambula (3 minutes by car), the monastery of Izamal (25 min by car) and the old colonial city of Merida (40 minutes by car) with the very nice old towncentre. Motul is a very nice base for making a trip to the mayatemples of Chitzen Itza , Uxmal , to visit the seaside resort Progresso or the national reserve Celestun where you can see flamingo's, turtles, alligators, hummingbirds etc. Cenotes are magical, enigmatic and unique in the world and were once the only resource for fresh, sweet water in the local Yucatecan jungle. They were the sacred places of the Maya for that reason, but also because they represented the entrance to the underworld. In some cases it's possible to swim or to dive. Yucatan has more than 3000 cenotes.

    How to arrive at Motul

When you arrive in Cancun International Airport.
